For this project, I explored my own visual language and artistic expression by creating a record for a live concert by the band Abba. I was required to build my design concepts around the rhythms in the songs, and elements of the concert in general. My idea was based around the concert and the immense amount of rain that neither killed the mood or calmed the crowd. I used my own watercolor art to create a psychedelic feel, and die cuts on the cover to symbolize the combination of rain and lights.
For this project, I worked around the concept of imagination and how balances masculine simplicity. My idea was to create an exterior packaging that is simple but builds anticipation for what is inside. I did this with typography and color blocking. This led to the individual chocolates, with imaginative drawings and hand-lettered quotes on the back. These wrappers led to the chocolate itself, full of bold and exciting flavors.
Type as Image
A project introducing layout design and working with spreads. The emphasis was finding a letter in an image and incorporating a quote on the other side of the spread. I chose an image of an Alabama bird house and used a section from a book that discussed the nature of the birds who lived in the region. I focused on mirroring the left image with my type, and used varying type weights to give interest.
A project designed to show the ability to see through a visual barrier, and relay a message in more ways than the text itself. Working with a quote by designer Erik Spiekermann, I created the visual representation of a funnel, and presented the idea that graphic designers are that funnel – taking a somewhat confusing idea and presenting it orderly for the viewers.
When I'm not designing, and often when I am, I am developing my calligraphy and hand-lettering skills and incorporating them into my work. There is something pure and organic about hand-lettering. These are just some examples of the range of my lettering styles which can be adjusted to fit any job. Feel free to ask about rates and specifics, or any questions you have about hand-lettering work you might be looking for,
Alabama Voter Guide Cover
For this project, I began with intense research of government design and voting posters. This led to an interest in pursuring collage and the idea behind a collage. My voter guide cover was chosen second in the state, to be used as the backup cover design.
